Buying a Used Digger or Excavator: What to Check

From hours and hydraulics to tracks and tipping points — a practical checklist for buying a used digger or excavator with confidence.

A good used digger can do everything a new one will for a fraction of the price — but only if it's been looked after. Whether you're after a mini digger for groundworks or a larger excavator for site work, here's a practical checklist to help you buy with confidence.

Match the machine to the job

Start with the work, not the machine. The size class — usually measured in operating weight — decides what you can dig, lift and get into:

  • 1–2 tonne mini diggers — domestic groundworks, drainage, landscaping and access through gateways.
  • 3–5 tonne — the all-rounder for farms, builders and contractors.
  • 8 tonne and up — heavier site work, bulk muck-shifting and demolition.

Also think about transport: can your trailer and towing vehicle legally carry it? A machine that's too big to move easily costs you every time you use it.

Check the hours — but read between them

Engine hours are the digger's mileage, but context matters. A machine with high hours that's been serviced on schedule can be a far better buy than a low-hour machine that's been neglected. Ask for the service history and look for consistent, sensible use.

Inspect the undercarriage and tracks

On a tracked machine the undercarriage is the most expensive thing to put right, so check it carefully:

  • Track tension and wear — rubber tracks should have plenty of tread and no chunks missing; steel tracks shouldn't be sloppy.
  • Rollers, idlers and sprockets for play or leaks.
  • Even wear side to side — uneven wear can hint at alignment or repair issues.

Test the hydraulics

Run the machine up to temperature and work every function — boom, dipper, bucket, slew and auxiliary lines. Movements should be smooth and strong, with no juddering, drifting or whining. Check rams and hoses for leaks, and make sure the machine holds a load without creeping down.

Engine, fluids and the cab

Look for a clean start, steady idle and no excessive smoke. Check oil and coolant for contamination, and have a look underneath for leaks. In the cab, test the controls, lights and any safety cut-offs.

Attachments and history

Buckets, breakers, augers and grabs add real value — confirm what's included and that hitches match. Finally, check the paperwork: serial numbers, any finance owing, and a clear description that matches the machine.
