Choosing the Right Horse Box: A Buyer's Guide

New or used, 3.5t or 7.5t, day-living or full luxury — how to choose a horse box that fits your horses, your licence and your budget.

A horse box is a big purchase and a long-term one — get it right and it'll serve you safely for years. Whether you're after something off the shelf or a bespoke build, here's how to choose a horse box that suits your horses, your licence and your budget.

Weight and your driving licence

This is the first thing to settle, because it decides what you can legally drive:

  • 3.5 tonne — drivable on a standard car licence (category B), ideal for one or two horses, but watch the payload carefully.
  • 7.2–7.5 tonne and above — more space and payload, but you'll need the appropriate category C1 (or C) entitlement.

If you passed your test after 1997 you may not automatically have C1 — check before you buy.

Payload is everything

The headline weight isn't what matters — the payload (what you can carry once the box itself is accounted for) is. Add up your horses, tack, water, fuel and any living fit-out, then make sure you're comfortably within the limit. Overloading is dangerous and illegal, and it's the most common mistake buyers make.

Stalls, layout and safety

Think about how your horses travel. Consider the number of stalls, herringbone vs forward/rear-facing layouts, partition strength, ramp gradient and anti-slip flooring. Good ventilation and a solid, well-maintained floor are non-negotiable on a used box.

Living and specification

Living space ranges from a simple groom's area to full luxury with kitchen, seating and overnight accommodation. Decide what you'll actually use — more living means less payload, so it's a balance.

New, used or bespoke?

A quality used box is great value if it's been cared for — check the chassis, floor, ramp and habitation thoroughly. A bespoke build lets you specify exactly what you want, from stall configuration to the finish of the living area. You can even supply your own chassis or have one sourced for you.

Servicing and aftercare

A horse box is part vehicle, part home — it needs both an MOT and proper habitation care. Buy from somewhere that can also service, repair and refurbish it down the line.
