Compact Tractors: Choosing the Right One for Your Land

A compact tractor is the machine that quietly does everything around a smallholding, yard or estate — topping paddocks, moving muck, towing trailers, running a loader and driving implements off the PTO. Get the specification right and it'll work for you for years. Here's what to weigh up.

How much horsepower do you need?

It's tempting to buy on horsepower alone, but the right figure depends on the work. For paddock topping, light haulage and yard duties, a smaller compact tractor is ideal and cheaper to run. If you'll be running a loader with heavy materials, a flail mower or a rotavator, step up the power so the tractor isn't working flat out. As a rule, buy a little more than you think you need for loader work — but don't pay for power you'll never use.

Transmission: which suits you?

• Manual / synchro — simple, robust and economical, ideal if most of your work is straightforward.
• Hydrostatic — smooth, easy, no clutching; brilliant for loader work and stop-start jobs where you're constantly changing direction.

If you'll spend a lot of time on the loader, hydrostatic makes life much easier.

Loaders and implements

A front loader transforms what a compact tractor can do — feeding, mucking out, loading trailers and moving pallets. Check whether the tractor is loader-ready and what capacity the loader offers. Then think about the implements you'll run: topper, flail mower, box blade, rotavator, post-knocker or trailer. Make sure the tractor has the PTO, hydraulics and lift capacity to drive them. Four-wheel drive, tyres and PTO

For anything off hard standing — wet paddocks, slopes, muddy gateways — four-wheel drive is well worth having. Consider tyre choice too: agricultural, turf or industrial, depending on whether you care more about grip or protecting ground. And check the PTO speed matches the implements you'll run.
