Mini Diggers: Sizes, Uses & Choosing the Right One

From 0.8-tonne micro diggers to 8-tonne machines — which size mini digger you need, and what each is good for.

Mini diggers punch well above their weight. From tucking into a back garden to trenching a field drain, the right size machine makes the job quick and the wrong one makes it a struggle. This guide runs through the sizes, what each is good for, and how to choose.

Mini digger sizes explained

Excavators are grouped roughly by operating weight, and weight is the best guide to what a machine can do and where it can go:

  • Micro (around 0.8–1 tonne) — narrow enough to fit through a standard doorway or side access. Perfect for gardens, landscaping and tight domestic work.
  • 1.5–2 tonne — the all-rounder. Enough dig depth and power for drainage, footings and small groundwork, while still being easy to transport on a plant trailer.
  • 3 tonne — a big step up in reach, dig depth and stability for serious groundwork, footings and utilities.
  • Midi (5–8 tonne) — for heavier construction, drainage and site work where you need real digging force and reach.

Match the machine to the access

The single most common mistake is buying too big to fit the site. Measure your tightest access point and your transport before you buy. Many micro and 1.5-tonne machines have retractable tracks and folding blades so they squeeze through narrow gaps then widen for stability once inside.

Dig depth, reach and buckets

Check the maximum dig depth and reach against the deepest, furthest job you'll tackle — trenches, footings, ponds. Think about buckets too: a set of digging buckets in different widths plus a grading bucket covers most work, and a quick-hitch makes changing them fast. A huge range of buckets, grabs and breakers means one digger can do far more.

What to check on a used machine

On any used digger, inspect the undercarriage and tracks (expensive to replace), the pins and bushes for play, and the hydraulics for leaks and smooth operation. Look at the hours and ask for service history. Our separate guide to buying a used digger or excavator has a full checklist.
